Pius attended the Manchester College of Music and Drama studying both acting and singing, before entering the Royal Northern College of Music to study voice. It was during the latter part of his course at the RNCM that Pius developed a passion for opera direction and was offered a position at Glyndebourne opera house. This was quickly followed by an invitation to become a staff director at the Royal Opera House, Covent garden.
During this period he directed operas in England, Ireland, Spain and Greece. Pius continued his singing – performing in the concert hall, on radio, tv and film. Also, during this period, he was commissioned to write a children’s musical, which was subsequently featured by the BBC.
In 1991 an invitation to direct a children’s opera in Sheffield, for the Sheffield Children’s Festival, coincided with the need to put down roots. Pius decided to relocate to Sheffield and set up his teaching practice. Pius studied for his teaching certificate with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and has now been teaching in Sheffield for 20 years.
