PIUS HUME c.t.a.b.r.s.m f.i.s.m. Is a Royal Schools of Music accredited singing teacher. He is a former Staff Director of The Royal Opera House Covent Garden and The Glydebourne Opera Comany The Buxton Music Festival and The Bach Festival. At this period he was also appointed Vocal Consultant to the Royal Omani Opera School in Muscat, Oman
Pius attended the Manchester College of Music and Drama studying both acting and singing, before entering the Royal Northern College of Music to study voice. It was during the latter part of his course at the RNCM that Pius developed a passion for opera direction and was offered a position at Glyndebourne opera house. This was quickly followed by an invitation to become a staff director at the Royal Opera House, Covent garden.
During this period he directed operas in England, Ireland, Spain and Greece. Pius continued his singing – performing in the concert hall, on radio, tv and film. Also, during this period, he was commissioned to write a children’s musical, which was subsequently featured by the BBC.
In 1991 an invitation to direct a children’s opera in Sheffield, for the Sheffield Children’s Festival, coincided with the need to put down roots. Pius decided to relocate to Sheffield and set up his teaching practice. Pius studied for his teaching certificate with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and has now been teaching in Sheffield for 26 years
Pius has worked with Jose Carreras, Agnes Balza, Felicity Lott, Ryland Davis, Robert Teare, Dame Josephine Barstow, Claudio Desderi, Ruggerio Raimondi, Anne Sofie Von Otter, Gwyn Howells, Denis O’Neil, and many other world famous singers. Pius has also worked with renowned conductors such as Sir Edward Downes, Sir Charles McRerras and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Pius has also directed actors such as Alan Bates and Rebecca Hall.
Pius has lectured in Singing and Opera Studies at Morley College London, R.C.A.T , Norton College. and Sheffield Music Academy
Pius is a Fellow of the Incorporated Society of Musicians
